Louisville, Ky. – Three Pirates were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association (NFCA) Mideast All-Region Team, the organization announced last Thursday. Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) were each named to the All-Region First Team, while Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) received All-Region Third Team honors. Seton Hall was one of five BIG EAST schools to place student-athletes on an All-Region Team.
This marks the first time a Pirate has been named to the All-Region First Team since Alexis Walkden back in 2017. Carr and Wingo become the first duo to both be named to the First Team since Jenna Best and Katie Pierce back in 2006. The three All-Region honorees are the most in a year for the program since five Pirates were honored after the 2005 season. Seton Hall has now had 27 All-Region selections in its program history.
Carr, who was also named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and was a unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection, led the team with a 1.95 ERA, 13 home runs and 50 RBI. The junior was one of just two players in the country to accumulate a sub-2.00 ERA, 10+ homers and 50+ RBI, joining Clemson's Valerie Cagle. Carr also led the team with a 1.152 OPS with 23 of her 45 base hits on the season going for extra bases. In the BIG EAST Championship Game against Villanova, Carr tossed a complete game allowing just one run as the Pirates locked up their first tournament title in 18 years. Her 50 RBI are tied for the second-most in a season in team history and, along with her 13 home runs, are the most by a pitcher in Seton Hall lore.
Wingo put up one of the best offensive season in team history, finishing the season with the third-highest batting average in a season at .397. The senior broke two school records in 2023, setting a new mark in base hits with 71 as well as setting the longest hitting streak at 19 games. At one point during the season, Wingo reached base safely in 37 consecutive games, and she only went hitless in back-to-back games twice all year. Wingo, who was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, showed why in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinal against UConn, robbing a home run in the top of the seventh in a two-run game to help seal the victory.
Smith put the team on her back during the BIG EAST Tournament run, going 8-for-13 with two home runs, three doubles, 11 RBI, 15.1 innings pitched and a 3-0 record. Those numbers helped the senior earn Most Outstanding Player as the Pirates won their first BIG EAST title since 2005. Overall, Smith batted .340 with eight home runs and 38 RBI while going 16-7 with a 2.87 ERA and 142 strikeouts in the circle. On April 22, Smith tossed the 21st no-hitter in Seton Hall history in a victory over Providence, the first no-no by a Pirate since 2010. Smith also reached a pair of milestones in 2023, as she struck out her 300th career batter back on April 1 against St. John's and picked up her 100th career base hit on May 11 against Villanova.
