South Orange, N.J. -- Despite sound defending for 83 minutes and an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, a header goal off of a corner kick proved to be the difference maker in a 1-0 win for Butler over the Seton Hall women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (4-9-3, 1-4-2 BIG EAST) are still in the playoff picture with three games remaining on the schedule. Two of those three games will take place at Owen T. Carroll Field.
How It Happened
Butler dominated possession for the majority of the first half but didn't have much to show for it as Anna Prawer (London, England) made two key saves that kept it a scoreless game. The Bulldogs meanwhile stayed organized on the backline and drew the Pirates offsides three times that helped negate multiple scoring opportunities. Despite the Pirates posting the final four shots of the half, including two by Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.), Seton Hall wasn't able to get on the scoreboard before the break.
The Pirates flipped the script in the second half as they battled and possessed the ball more effectively and it led to more offensive chances. Three shots in the span of five minutes, two from Tavana and one from Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) were all stopped by the Butler keeper. Defensively for The Hall, Lily Camacho (Summit, N.J.) at centerback and Rachel Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) at outside back erased multiple chances for the Bulldogs along with Kyle Ray (Hampden, Mass.) and Chiara Pucci. However, with seven minutes left, Butler broke through on its sixth and final corner kick of the game as a head put the Bulldogs ahead, 1-0.
Up Next
The Pirates return to Owen T. Carroll Field on Thursday at 6 p.m. when they host Creighton. It's Most Valuable Professor Night and free soft pretzels will be given away while supplies last.
