Caye's Walk-Off Headlines Doubleheader Sweep Over UIC
3/3/2024 12:01:00 AM | Softball
Game 1: Seton Hall 6, UIC 5
How it Happened
- The Flames got their offense going early by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first.
- Seton Hall quickly fought back, tying the game in the second thanks to an RBI single from Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.).
- The Hall put up a four spot in the third, the first of which came across on an RBI double from Carr. Katey Brennan (Yardley, Pa.), Hobbes and Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) would each follow with run-scoring singles later in the frame to make it a 6-2 lead.
- Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) helped the Pirates maintain the lead through the middle innings, allowing just two baserunners between the second and fifth innings.
- UIC made things close late after home runs in the sixth and seventh innings made it a one run game. Kreuscher was able to dig deep to get a strikeout to end the game and preserve the win.
- Hobbes went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in a pair of runs.
- Kreuscher went the distance to improve to 3-0 on the season.
- Brennan collected her third straight multi-hit game.
How it Happened
- UIC started game two the same way it started game one by plating two runs in the top of the first.
- Brennan would help the Pirates get a run back with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first.
- The Flames would extend their lead in the second after a bases loaded walk and a two-run single made it a 5-1 game.
- Late in the game, the Pirates found the flare for the dramatic. With two outs and nobody on, Caye and Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) singled to extend the inning, and a Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) walk loaded the bases. Carr stepped in and hit a 2-1 pitch over the wall in center field for the game-tying grand slam.
- After a clean top of the seventh, the Pirate bats went back to work. Howard singled with one out, followed by a walk to Perez. This set up Caye, who laced a three-run home run to left field to win the game.
- Caye's home run is her first since leaving the yard back on April 16, 2022 at Georgetown.
- This marks the first non-run rule walk-off home run by the Pirates since April 6, 2019 when Baylee Allender hit one to beat Georgetown.
- Carr's home run is her second of the year after hitting 13 last season to lead the team.
The Pirates will wrap up the weekend on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. when they face North Dakota.
