South Orange, N.J. – The Pirates made some noise late and loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to complete the comeback in a 4-2 defeat to UConn on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
The Huskies struck in the first inning with a pair of runs, the first coming in after a throwing error allowed Lexi Hastings to score. Later in the inning, an RBI single from Kaitlyn Kibling made it a 2-0 UConn lead.
The lead remained that way until the fourth, when a sacrifice fly made it a 3-0 Huskies' lead. UConn would tack on another run in the sixth after a wild pitch allowed a runner to score from third.
Peyton Kinney started for UConn and held Seton Hall's bats quiet through the first five inning. After she was replaced by Meghan O'Neil to start the sixth, the Pirate bats awoke. Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to get The Hall on the board.
The next two batters reached base for Seton Hall, however O'Neil worked out of the inning unscathed. In the bottom of the seventh, two base hits and a walk loaded the bases with one out in the inning. After a strikeout, Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) worked a bases loaded walk to make it a two-run game and move the tying run into scoring position. With Kinney back in the circle to try and close it out, a popout to shortstop allowed UConn to hang on for the win.
News & Notes
The Pirates will go for the series victory on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. Seton Hall will also be hosting its annual Alumnae Tailgate, which will also feature a pregame celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 2004 BIG EAST Championship team.
