South Orange, N.J. – Five Pirates were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, the organization announced Tuesday. Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.), Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.), Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.), Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) each received the distinction for their stellar performance both on the field and in the classroom.
Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and they must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average in order to be named to the All-District Team.
Babik was elevated into the No. 2 slot in the starting rotation as a senior for the Pirates and excelled during her final year in South Orange. The Gilbert, Ariz. native compiled a 4.66 ERA in 94.1 innings pitched on the season. During her homecoming trip early in the season to the Phoenix area as the Pirates competed in the ASU/GCU Classic, Babik had a pair of strong performances. The highlight came in her second outing of the weekend against Grand Canyon, where she limited the Lopes' strong offense to just four hits and two earned runs over six innings.
Carr put together another strong two-way season for the Pirates in 2024. In the circle, Carr posted a 3.35 ERA overall, a number which shrunk to just 2.73 against BIG EAST opponents. At the dish, Carr blasted a team-high 10 home runs, becoming the first Pirate to hit double-digit home runs in consecutive seasons since Alexis Walkden in 2016-17. The All-BIG EAST First Team honoree had an array of superstar performances on the season, highlighted by throwing the 22nd no-hitter in Seton Hall softball history on April 23 against Drexel. Offensively, Carr finished the season with eight multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI outings.
Gilbert had another breakout season in the middle of the Pirates' batting order, culminating in landing on the All-BIG EAST First Team as her first all-conference selection. The junior hit .319 on the season as a whole, but shined brightest in BIG EAST play by hitting a team-best .370 in 24 games. Gilbert was a run-producing machine, driving in a team-high 37 runs on the season. She tied or set new career-highs in batting average, doubles, home runs, RBI, walks, on-base percentage and slugging percentage in 2024.
Hobbes stepped in as the new starting second baseman for the Pirates in 2024, proving to be a defensive stalwart at the position. The sophomore started in all 50 games for Seton Hall, committing just two errors in 200 chances for a .990 fielding percentage. At the plate, Hobbes compiled a .225 batting average with 13 RBI, and launched her first career home run in a win at St. John's on April 26.
Howard assumed the starting catching duties for the Pirates in 2024, proceeding to be behind the plate for every single inning of the season. While managing the pitching staff, Howard also contributed at the plate with a .295 batting average and 22 RBI. The sophomore did an exemplary job of maintaining the running game of opponents, throwing out 13 would-be base stealers on the season.
