South Orange, N.J. - Jeff Matteo, entering his seventh season on Andreas Lindberg's Seton Hall men's soccer coaching staff, has been promoted to associate head coach, Lindberg announced this week. In his time at Seton Hall so far, Matteo has helped the Pirates win the BIG EAST Championship, qualify for two NCAA Tournaments and reach the national quarterfinals.
"Jeff has made a big impact on our program during his six years at Seton Hall," said Lindberg. "His experience in recruiting, tactical expertise and player relationships make him a great asset for the program. He is a soccer guy that's gets it, and I'm excited to continue to work with him."
In his six seasons at Seton Hall, Matteo has been instrumental in helping Lindberg recruit and develop outstanding soccer players. He has helped Seton Hall qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament three out of the last four years, win the 2020 BIG EAST Championship and reach both the 2020 and 2022 NCAA Tournaments.
In 2023, Matteo helped coach the Pirates to a second-straight winning season and a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. The team pitched four shutouts in non-conference play and went 7-1-1 in home matches.
In 2022, Seton Hall finished 7-4-7 overall and 4-1-5 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall's 17 points in conference action were its most since 2006 and resulted in a second place finish in the league standings, the program's highest finish since 1991. Seton Hall received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, qualifying for the second time in three seasons.
In 2020, Matteo helped guide the Pirates to one of the program's most successful seasons in school history. The team captured its first BIG EAST Tournament Championship since 1991, qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005 and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for only the second time in program history and first since 1988. At season's end, Matteo was honored as part of the East Region Coaching Staff of the Year and BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Matteo helped develop five Pirates who were named to All-BIG EAST Teams with CJ Tibbling and Luca Dahn also earning second-team All-America designation.
Matteo came to South Orange with a wealth of BIG EAST experience, having spent 11 seasons on the coaching staff across the river at St. John's. During his time in Queens, the Red Storm made five NCAA Tournament appearances, won three BIG EAST titles and made an appearance in the 2008 College Cup. Matteo helped mentor 13 All-Region selections and 28 All-BIG EAST honorees during his time on the coaching staff at St. John's.
Matteo was an All-American and the 2001 BIG EAST Midfielder of the year during his playing days at St. John's. He played in four NCAA Tournaments with the Red Storm and won a pair of BIG EAST titles. He graduated in with a bachelor of science in telecommunications and a minor in business in 2001 before a five-year professional playing career in the United States and Italy.
