Offensive Woes Cost Pirates Against Butler, 3-0

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Despite recording more hits than their opposition, the Seton Hall softball team (10-12, 2-5) fell to the Butler Bulldogs (11-9, 4-0), 3-0, to open the weekend series at the Butler Softball Field.
How It Happened
After a strong weekend last week against UConn, Karissa Dupuis picked up right where she left off in her return to the circle. In swift fashion, the junior pitched three scoreless innings to open the game without allowing a baserunner, leaving Butler baffled. On the other hand, the Pirates' offense was suffering the same fate. Despite nabbing the game's only base runner through three innings, the Pirates struggled to find quality contact.
In the fourth inning, the Pirates found their first string of high-quality offense of the weekend. After being nailed with two quick outs, a pair of singles and a walk gave The Hall a chance to take the lead. Yet after working a 1-1 count, a flyout to left field ended any offensive hopes from that frame.
However, the Bulldogs would immediately strike where the Pirates failed in the bottom of the inning. After the opening two runners reached base, an error on the next batter allowed a run to score to put Seton Hall in a 1-0 hole. That deficit only grew when Butler's next batter, Makena Alexander, drove a 2-1 pitch over the wall to make it a 3-0 game in favor of the home team.
Even with the deficit, scoring opportunities continued to present themselves in the next two frames. Both times, Seton Hall stepped to the plate with two outs and two runners on. However, both batted balls died in the air to end both innings to leave The Hall still down 3-0.
With three outs remaining in the game, the Pirates had one more chance to draw the proceedings even in the seventh inning. While a one-out single presented a threat on the basepaths, two quick fly ball outs ended the game to hand the team a 3-0 loss to open the series.
