VILLANOVA, PA. – Thanks to Katey Brennan's continued hot streak and a near no-hitter for Karissa Dupuis, the Seton Hall softball team's (15-23, 5-13) downed to the Villanova Wildcats (9-32, 5-12), 4-0, at the Villanova Softball Complex to secure the series win.
How It Happened
In a crucial rubber match between the two BIG EAST sides, the Pirates once again found themselves in another pitching duel in the early innings. Through two innings, junior hurler Karissa Dupuis scattered one walk across two frames with a strikeout. Half an inning later, The Hall's offense rewarded Dupuis' strong showing in a major way.
After a pair of singles, a red-hot Katey Brennan went to the plate with a chance to give The Hall the early lead. After fighting her way to a full count, Brennan saw her opportunity. The junior launched the ball deep into right centerfield for a three-run home run, her second of the weekend, to give Seton Hall the early 3-0 lead.
As Dupuis kept the Wildcats quiet, Villanova responded by silencing The Hall's offense as they searched for a way back into the game. Those dreams were crushed in the sixth inning when, two pitches into the inning, Naya Martinez drove the 1-0 pitch over the left field wall to make it a 4-0 lead for the Pirates.
As the sixth inning arrived, with a chance to secure the win, Dupuis had a chance to make history. Through five innings, she had yet to allow a hit as the murmurings of a potential no-hit bid grew inside the stadium. Unfortunately for her, with two outs in the inning, a bloop single ended the hopes of that history-making moment.
Despite that, Dupuis remained unfazed. After getting out of the sixth, she scattered two hits in the final inning to secure the 4-0 win for the Seton Hall Pirates.
News & Notes
The Pirates will continue their season at home when the host the FDU Knights for a doubleheader at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field on, Wednesday, April 15. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
