Pirates Split Doubleheader With Connecticut

Junior right-hander B.J. Benik (Southampton, NJ) went the distance for the Pirates in the first game to earn his fourth win of the season. Benik allowed three runs while striking out four.
Seton Hall collected 14 hits in the game, including seven extra-base hits. Sophomore right fielder Jeff Miller (Springfield, NJ) led the Pirate with a single, home run and two RBI. Freshman left fielder Casey Grimm (Morristown, NJ) slugged two doubles in four at-bats.
In the second game, the Pirates pounded out 17 hits, but struggled on the mound and in the field, losing 16-12. Five Seton Hall pitchers combined to allow 18 hits, while the defense committed six errors.
Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Seton Hall surrendered eight runs on six hits and three errors in the inning to give the Huskies a nine-run lead. Seton Hall scored runs in each of the last five innings, but it was not enough to erase the early deficit.
Junior brothers Brian and Kevin Leighton (Brewster, NY) both hit home runs for the Pirates and combined to drive in six runs. Junior shortstop Tony Calabrese (Riverside, CT) went 3-for-5 with a double and one RBI.
The Pirates and Huskies with play the rubber game of the three-game series on March 26 at Noon.
