Seton Hall Baseball Wins Second Straight Game

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ -- The Seton Hall baseball team improved to 3-5 with a 7-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on March 8 at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Pirates took an early lead with a run in the first. With the bases loaded and one out, junior first baseman Brian Leighton (Brewster, NY) walked, driving in junior second baseman Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ).
The Knights responded with two runs in the third on a two-run double by left fielder David Arroyo, scoring third baseman Mark Zielinski and shortstop Lenny Armenti.
Seton Hall responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore center fielder Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) opened the inning with a double and scored on a single by Cuervo, who advanced to second on an error. Senior third baseman Ray Navarrete (Colts Neck, NJ) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Kevin Leighton (Brewster, NY), with Cuervo moving to third. Following a strike out, senior designated hitter Alfie Critelli (Summit, NJ) drove home Navarrete and Cuervo with a two-run single to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead.
Seton Hall would extend the lead with a run in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Junior right-hander B.J. Benik (Southampton, NJ), who was scheduled to only pitch three innings, earned the win allowing two hits and one earned run. Senior right-hander Damon Ponce de Leon (Demarest, NJ) and sophomore lefty Isaac Pavlik (Rutherford, NJ) combined to strike out eight in six scoreless innings of relief.
The Pirates will compete in the Homestead Challenge on March 12-18 in Homestead, FL.
