SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (April 13, 2000) -- The Seton Hall baseball team improved to 22-9 overall with a 6-3 victory over Fairfield on April 13 at Owen T. Carroll Field.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the seventh, Seton Hall took the lead with three runs. Freshman Casey Grimm (Morristown, NJ) reached on a one-out single and advanced to second on a walk by pinch hitter Todd Crawford (Millersville, PA). Following a pitching change, Grimm moved to third on a wild pitch by Fairfield right-hander Dave Catelotti. Sophomore left fielder Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) pushed a bunt towards second, scoring Grimm and advancing pinch runner Joe Scott (Old Tappan, NJ) to second. Junior second baseman Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ) followed with a double, scoring Scott to give the Pirates a two-run lead. Following a walk to senior third baseman Ray Navarrete (Colts Neck, NJ), senior designated hitter Alfie Critelli (Summit, NJ) drove home Cuervo with a single to left.
Freshman right-hander Scott Zadina (Linwood, NJ) earned his first collegiate victory with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief. Freshman starter Brett Hoffmann (Little Rock, AR) allowed only one earned run while striking out six in 6.2 innings but did not factor in the decision. Senior right-hander Damon Ponce de Leon (Demarest, NJ) earned his first save by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Cuervo led the Pirates with three hits and three RBI.
The Pirates resume BIG EAST play with a three-game series at Boston College on April 15-16.
