For the first time since 1987, the Seton Hall baseball team will participate in the NCAA Championship. The Pirates were selected as an at-large team to go to Columbia, SC, as the No. 3 seed to take on No. 2 seed Wake Forest on Friday, May 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Sarge Frye Field.
The four-team region will be hosted by the University of South Carolina, also the No. 1 seed in the region and the top-ranked team in the nation. South Carolina takes on No. 4 seed Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
?This is a great accomplishment for our team,? Seton Hall head coach Mike Sheppard said. ?We are looking forward to continuing our season against some very strong competition in South Carolina.?
Seton Hall is 40-16 after advancing to the championship game of the BIG EAST Conference tournament last weekend, losing to Rutgers, 1-0. The Pirates helped secure the bid by winning four of six games at the tourney.
Seton Hall?s 40 wins marks the most victories at the school since the 1987 season, when the Pirates, led by current major leaguers Craig Biggio, Mo Vaughn and John Valentin, won the BIG EAST, earned the NCAA bid and finished the season 45-10.
This is the 15th NCAA appearance in Seton Hall history, and the 11th for Seton Hall head coach Mike Sheppard, who is in his 28th year. Sheppard won his 900th career game earlier this season and was named the Co-Coach of the Year by the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association.
