Baseball Drops 12-9 Decision to Bowling Green

HOMESTEAD, FL (March 10, 2001) - Freshman shortstop Santiago Chi (West New York, NJ) went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, but Seton Hall fell to Bowling Green 12-9 at the Homestead Challenge.
Corey Loomis snapped a 6-6 tie when he plated pinch runner David Barkholz from second with a two out single to right. Nate Henschen followed with a single to right that drove in Scott Dukate. Shortstop Nick Elrod then extended the lead to 11-6 when he belted a three-run homer off Seton Hall reliever Bryan Haggerty.
Seton Hall (1-6) jumped out to a 6-0 lead with six runs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore third baseman Joe Scott (Old Tappan, NJ) and Chi had RBI singles while senior second baseman Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ) connected for a two-out grand slam to left off Falcon starter Kyle Knoblauch.
Bowling Green (4-0) chipped away at the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second off Seton Hall starter Isaac Pavlik. Aric Christman and Lee Morrison both had two-out two-run singles. Catcher Tim Newell tied the game at 6-6 with a two-out solo homer to left in the bottom of the sixth. The Falcons scored 11 of their 12 runs with two-out base hits.
Seton Hall threatened in the top of the eighth. Chi drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double to left-centerfield, but the Pirates stranded two runners on base.
Left-hander Aaron Nease (1-0) earned the win for Bowling Green with 2.1 innings of relief. Seton Hall right-hander Elvys Quezada (0-2) absorbed the loss in relief of Pavlik.
Cuervo, Scott and junior centerfielder Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) also had two hits each as Seton Hall pounded out 11 hits against four different Bowling Green pitchers.
Seton Hall returns to action on Sunday, March 11 when it travels to Miami, Florida for a 1 p.m. game against Florida International University.
