Baseball Drops 10-4 Decision to Florida International

MIAMI, FL (March 11, 2001) - Senior first baseman Brian Leighton (Brewster, NY) went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, but the Seton Hall baseball team dropped a 10-4 decision to Florida International University.
The Golden Panthers (18-5), who have won eight straight, used an eight-run second inning to take control early. Gus Alfonso doubled twice and drove in two runs as FIU sent 12 batters to the plate in the second.
Florida International loaded the bases on a walk, a double and an error to open the inning. Shortstop Mickey Torello drew a bases-loaded walk off Seton Hall starter Shawn Tarkington (0-1) to force in the first run. Tino Burgos followed with a two-run double down the rightfield line and Matt Huntingford contributed a two-run single to center.
Seton Hall scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back home runs by junior second baseman Josh Schuck (Edison, NJ) and Brian Leighton.
The Pirates had opportunities to close the gap after loading the bases in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings but scored just one run. Seton Hall left a total of ten runners on base.
Right-hander Paul Zervas (3-0) gave up two runs on four hits over six innings to earn the win for Florida International.
The Pirates received a strong outing from freshman left-hander Jeff Barrow (North East, MD) who yielded just two hits and one run in 4.1 innings of relief. Junior right-hander Adam Artiano (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) also pitched one scoreless inning for Seton Hall.
Seton Hall resumes play in the Homestead Challenge on Monday, March 12 with a 2:30 p.m. game against Indiana University.
