SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (April 3, 2001) - Senior catcher Adam Arslanian (Fair Lawn, NJ) connected for a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Seton Hall to a 5-2 win over Yale at Owen T. Carroll Field.
With the win, Seton Hall improves 13-13. Yale falls to 6-10.
With runners on first and second and one out in the eighth, Arslanian belted his second homer of the season to left-centerfield off Yale reliever Matt McCarthy (2-3) to give the Pirates their first lead of the afternoon.
Seton Hall trailed 2-0 but scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull even. Senior first baseman Kevin Leighton (Brewster, NY) walked to open the inning. Arslanian moved Leighton to second with a sacrifice bunt and reached base on a throwing error. After pinched hitter Matt Cuttruff popped up for the first out, junior centerfielder Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) singled up the middle, scoring Leighton with the first run. With two out, pinch hitter Kyle Williams (West Chester, PA) reached on a throwing error by Yale shortstop Mike Hirschfield, allowing Arslanian to score the tying run.
Seton Hall junior left-hander Isaac Pavlik (Rutherford, NJ), who entered the game in the eighth inning, retired the final six batters he faced after giving up a leadoff walk. He improves to 1-2.
Yale broke a scoreless tie with one run in the top of the fifth. Second baseman Steven Duke led off the fifth inning with a single to right - the Bulldogs' first hit off Seton Hall starter Shawn Tarkington. Duke stole second and scored on a two-out single by third baseman Blake Golom.
Yale extended its lead to 2-0 with a run in the top of the sixth. Tarkington issued walks to leftfielder Randy Leonard and catcher Darren Beasley to open inning. With one out, freshman first baseman Kyle Misenti singled to left-center, scoring Leonard.
Both starting pitchers turned in strong outings but did not figure in the decision. Tarkington gave up three hits while striking out 10 in 5 1/3 inning. Yale right-hander Doug Feller gave up three hits and no runs in four innings. He struck seven and didn't walk a batter.
Seton Hall finished with six hits. Bascom and Arslanian, who also doubled in the fourth, both went 2-for-3.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they host Pace University in a 3 p.m. makeup game at Owen T. Carroll Field.
