Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep of Georgetown, 15-4

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (April 8, 2001) - Senior right-hander Shawn Tarkington (Peekskill, NY) pitched one-hit ball over six innings to lead Seton Hall to a 15-4 win over Georgetown and a sweep of the three-game BIG EAST series.
Seton Hall improves to 17-14 overall and 8-5 in BIG EAST play. The Pirates are now locked in a four-way tie for third place in the BIG EAST with Rutgers, Virginia Tech and St. John's. Georgetown drops to 9-25 and 3-10 in the conference.
Tarkington (3-1), who won his third straight decision, yielded only a double by Georgetown first baseman Eric Santana in the top of the third. He struck out eight and walked three in his six-inning stint.
Seton Hall scored in every inning but the sixth. Senior rightfielder Joe Cuervo (Warren, NJ) led off with a bunt single and stole second. After moving to third on an error, Cuervo came home when sophomore leftfielder Casey Grimm (Morristown, NJ) got caught in a rundown between first and second.
The Pirates added three runs in the bottom of the second. Junior second baseman Josh Schuck (Edison, NJ) drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by junior shortstop Chris Carter (Fair Haven, NJ). A balk by Georgetown starter Randy Erwin (2-5) enabled Schuck to score. After Cuervo drew a two-out walk, junior centerfielder Mike Bascom (Ocean Township, NJ) drove in two runs with a double to left, giving Seton Hall a 4-0 lead.
Senior first baseman Brian Leighton (Brewster, NY) led off the third inning with his fourth home run while his twin brother, designated hitter Kevin Leighton, connected for a two-run homer in the seventh inning.
Bascom, who went 2-for-4, added an RBI single in the fourth inning and a bases-loaded walk in the fifth. He finished with a team-leading four runs batted in.
Seton Hall held an 11-0 lead before Georgetown scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. Catcher Phil Pierorazio led off the inning with a double. Seton Hall reliever Jeff Barrow then hit shortstop Brian Cassese and second baseman Tony Lee to load the bases. Barrow struck out Jason Boice and Ron Cano, but centerfielder Carlos Gazitua drove in two runs with a single to right-center. Georgetown also scored twice in the top of the ninth.
Seton Hall, which finished with 15 hits, received hits from nine different players. Cuervo, who scored four runs, went 2-for-2 and walked twice. Chris Carter went 3-for-6 and scored two runs.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday, April 10 when it they Stony Brook in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
