SOUTH ORANGE, NJ (May 8, 2001) - Freshman second baseman Anthony Giudice scored the decisive run on an error in the top of the ninth inning as St. Francis (NY) pulled away from Seton Hall for a 6-2 victory at Owen T. Carroll Field.
St. Francis improves to 25-20 while Seton Hall drops to 26-20-1.
Giudice led off the top of the ninth inning with a double to right-centerfield off Seton Hall reliever Elvys Quezada (0-3). Shortstop Mike Cannone then dropped down a sacrifice bunt moving Giudice to third, and Seton Hall first baseman Todd Crawford's throw to first was high, enabling Giudice to score the eventual winning run. Seton Hall reliever Isaac Pavlik walked Vinny Caiazza before retiring the next two batters in what should have been the second and third outs of the inning. Cannone came home on a passed ball to increase the lead to 4-2. Kasey Kozlowski added an RBI triple and Michael Molinini contributed an infield single as the Terriers extended their lead to 6-2.
Freshman righthander Dave DiTommaso (3-0), the fifth of six St. Francis pitchers, picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Seton Hall sophomore leftfielder Casey Grimm (Morristown, NJ), but stranded him at third base.
Seton Hall received two hits each from Grimm, Crawford and junior second baseman Josh Schuck (Edison, NJ). Crawford added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning that tied the game at 2-2.
Molinini was the only St. Francis player with two hits. Greg Clements added an RBI double in the top of the first while Anthony Esposito had an RBI single in the top of the third.
Seton Hall returns to action on Wednesday, May 9 with a 3:30 p.m. game at Princeton University.
