Baseball Falls to Rival Rutgers, 9-5

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.— The Seton Hall baseball team lost to Rutgers, 9-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll field in a non-conference match-up. The Pirates were led by Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) who was 3-for-5 with two runs, one RBI, a double and two stolen bases. Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with two runs and Brandon Cohen (River Edge, N.J.) was 3-for-4 with one run and two doubles.

Both teams tallied 13 hits, but Rutgers (18-18-1) stranded 16 runners on base compared to Seton Hall’s seven. The Pirates committed four errors while the Scarlet Knights had just one. The teams scored in every inning but the fourth and the ninth and traded the lead twice.

Seton Hall jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. Lopez led off the inning with a single to left field, and moved around the bases on a stolen base and a ground-out. A ground-out by Robbie Hine (Brick, N.J.) drove Lopez across the plate for the first run of the game.

Rutgers took the lead in the top of the second, scoring two runs for a 2-1 lead. After Ryan Hill reached base on a fielding error and moved to second on a David Williams hit-by-pitch, he scored on a Tim Querns single through the right side. A bunt single by Tom Edwards scored Willliams for the second run of the inning. Rutgers ended the inning with the bases loaded.

The Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the second, after Cohen led the inning off with his first double of the game. Hines drove Cohen across the plate on a RBI single through the left side. Mike Morano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) reached base after he was hit by a pitch, and scored on a Lopez double to center field to give Seton Hall a 3-2 lead.

The Scarlet Knights scored the next five runs of the game, with one in the third, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth. With one out in the third inning, Hill singled to right field and moved to second on ground-out. He scored two plays later on a Querns single through the left side to tied the game at 3. In the fifth inning, Hook started the inning off in with a single up the middle. A single by Williams and a ground-out by Edwards scored Hook to take a 4-3 lead. Rutgers offense exploded in the sixth, scoring three runs. With runners on second and third and no out, Meade crossed the plate on a passed ball for a 5-3 lead. A one-out single by Williams scored Hill and Williams scored the final run of the inning while Querns was in a run-down pickoff in-between first and second to make the score 7-3.

Seton Hall cut into the lead in the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings, scoring one run in each of innings. In the sixth, John Walsh (Jersey City, N.J.) singled with one out to put a runner on first. Cohen hit his second double of the day to move Walsh to third, and Walsh scored on a Hines sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Lopez scored his second run of the game on a Hine double to left field after moving around the bases on a single to left field and stealing second.

Rutgers scored two more runs in the eighth for the final score of 9-5. Williams drove in his second run of the day on a RBI single that scored Hill, and Williams scored his third run of the day on a Vincent Sangemino single to center field.

Rutger’s Matt Giannini (3-4) earned the win, striking out six batters in 6.2 innings of work. Seton Hall’s Keith Cantwell (Tinton Falls, N.J.) (1-5) was credited with the loss, giving up just three earned runs in 5.0 innings.

Seton Hall will host FDU on Wednesday, Apr. 26, at Owen T. Carroll field. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
