
Baseball Defeats Hofstra, 3-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.-- The Seton Hall baseball team snapped a six-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Hofstra on Tuesday afternoon. The Pirates improve to 6-12 overall while Hofstra falls to 9-13. Sophomores Tim McCann (Monasquan, N.J.) and Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) led the squad with two hits apiece. Sophomore Keith Cantwell (Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched a complete game for the Pirates, striking out a career-high nine batters.
The Pirates out-hit the Pride 8-6 and stranded 14 runners on base compared to Hofstra’s five. Hofstra committed three errors.
Hofstra scored one run in the first inning, but was held scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Pride scored its lone run when Anthony Sarno drove Chris Mentrasti across the plate on a single up the middle.
The Pirates tied up the game in the top of the fourth with two outs. With Mike Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) at second and Robbie Hine (Brick, N.J.) at first, McCann drove a single that scored Young to tie the game at one.
Seton Hall took the lead in the seventh and added a cushion to the score in the top of the ninth. In the seventh, Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miller. With one out, sophomore Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) blasted a double to drive in McDonald for the 2-1 lead. In the ninth inning, after Miller singled to start the inning, he moved around the bases and scored on a single by Young for the 3-1 victory.
In addition to the nine strikeouts, Cantwell (1-0) walked just one batter and gave up six hits to earn the victory. Hofstra’s Anthony Sarno (0-2) was credited with the loss.
Seton Hall will host Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Mar. 28, at 3:30 p.m. on Owen T. Carroll field.
