
Baseball Tops Norfolk, 4-1

NORFOLK, Va.- The Seton Hall baseball team defeated Norfolk, 4-1 on Friday afternoon at Marty L. Miller field. The Pirates improve to 5-6 with the win while Norfolk falls to 9-8. The Pirates were led by sophomore pitcher Corey Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) who earned the win. Sophomore Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) led the offense with two hits.
The Pirates out-hit the Spartans 8-4 and were errorless. Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.), Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) each tallied a multiple base hit that drove in a run.
Seton Hall jumped out to an early lead and held it for the remainder of the game. The Pirates scored two runs in the top of the first. Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) reached base after being hit by a pitch in the first at-bat of the game, and scored two plays later on a McDonald double down the left field line. McDonald crossed the plate on a Miller ground-out to shortstop to take a 2-0 lead.
Norfolk added its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Charles LaLane led the inning off with a walk, and moved around the bases on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Lyall Foran double. Young pitched himself out of the inning on a ground-out and a strikeout.
The Pirates added a run in both the second and the third innings. In the second, Smedberg led the inning off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.). In the third, the Pirates scored a run with two outs. With two outs, Miller singled to left field and sophomore Affinito drove him across the plate on a double to right center.
The remainder of the game was a battle of the defense, as neither team scored and the score remained 4-1 as a final.
Young tallied 10 strikeouts and gave up just three hits in 8.0 innings for the win. Norfolk’s Leon Schabacker was credited with the loss. McDonald earned the save, striking out two in 1.0 inning.
Seton Hall and Norfolk will face off in game two of the three game series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
