SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team defeated Princeton, 7-4 in mid-week action at Owen T. Carroll field. The Pirates improve to 17-16 with the win while Princeton falls to 8-19 with the loss. The game was originally scheduled to be held at Princeton, but was switched due to poor field conditions. Seton Hall’s Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) and Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.) each tallied two hits.
Seton Hall out-hit Princeton 7-5 and stranded eight runners on base while Princeton left one.
Although the Tigers scored the first run of the game for a half-inning lead, it would be their only lead of the game. In the top of the second, Sal Iacono led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.
Seton Hall answered with five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-1 lead. Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) scored the first run of the game on a Mark Pappas (Ocean Township, N.J.) single to center field. With no outs, Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) reached on a throwing error that loaded the bases with Mike Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) at third and Pappas at second. Mike Morano (Basking Ridge, N.J.) drew a base-on-balls to walk home Young from third and take the 2-1 lead. Smedberg drove in Pappas for the third run of the inning on a blooper single to right field. A Hines double to left field scored Morano and Lopez for the four run lead.
The Pirates extended their lead to 7-1, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Smedberg led off the inning with a single up the middle and Hines drew a base-on-balls to put runners at first and second. Smedberg and Hines executed a double steal to advance into scoring position and John Walsh (Jersey City, N.J.) drove in the runners on a double to right center field.
Princeton scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brandon Englert and Dan DeGeorge led off the inning with singles and a stand-up triple by Greg Van Horn cut the Pirate lead to 7-3. Aaron Prince drove in Van Horn on a single to right field for the final run of the inning.
Seton Hall’s Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) (3-0) was credited with the win while Princeton’s Jon Broscious (1-2) was credited with the loss. The Pirates received solid relief pitching as D. J. Cunningham (Florham Park, N.J.) pitched three innings and Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) closed out the top of the ninth.
The Pirates will travel to Wagner on Wednesday, Apr. 18. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
