
Baseball Defeats Wagner, 6-3

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Seton Hall baseball team topped Wagner, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Willetts Field. The Pirates improve to 18-16 with the win while Wagner falls to 8-21. With the win, the Pirates surpassed its season win total since the 2004 season: the last time the Pirates had more than 17 wins in a season was 23 in 2003.
Seton Hall was led by the efforts of John Walsh (Jersey City, N.J.) who tallied two hits, three RBI, one run and a homerun. Mark Pappas (Ocean Township, N.J.) and Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.) each tallied two hits. Seton Hall out-hit Wagner 9-6.
Wagner scored the first three runs of the game with one run in the second and two in the third. In the second inning, Matt Mastrianni led off the inning with a base-on-balls. He moved to second on a single by Joe Conforti and scored on an error to give Wagner a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, Joseph DiGeronimo led off the inning with a single and was brought across the plate by a homerun by Peter Delleani to take a 3-0 lead.
The Pirates scored one run in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a base-on-balls. He moved to third on a fielder’s choice and crossed the plate on a Pappas fielder’s choice.
Seton Hall tallied five runs in the top of the fifth inning for the final runs of the game as both team’s defense held strong. In the fifth, Robbie Hine (Brick, N.J.) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a balk. He scored when Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) reached base on a throwing error. Hines followed the throwing error with a single and moved to second on the throw to put runners at second and third. With just one out, Walsh blasted a homerun to drive in Smedberg and Hines and give the Pirates a 5-3 lead. Pappas followed the homerun with a double and crossed the plate on a Bobby Dombrowski (Denville, N.J.) single to left field.
Seton Hall's Sean Black (2-3) (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) earned the win while Wagner's Matt Watson (1-3) was credited with the loss. The Pirate's Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) received his fourth save of the season.
The Pirates will host Louisville on Friday, Apr. 20, at Owen T. Carroll field. The game is the first night game for the Pirates at the newly renovated Owen T. Carroll field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
