
Baseball Defeats NYIT, 8-6

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.-- The Seton Hall baseball snapped a three-game skid with a 8-6 win over New York Tech on Tuesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll field. The Pirates improve to 19-19 overall while the Bears fall to 12-18. Seton Hall's Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.) drove in three RBI.
Seton Hall was out-hit 10-8 while leaving seven runners on base compared to NYIT's six.
The Pirates took a 5-0 lead entering the top of the sixth inning. Seton Hall scored its first run of the game in the third inning when Hines drove in Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) on a sacrifice fly to center field. In the fifth inning, Seton Hall loaded the bases with no outs and after Hines drew a base-on-balls, he allowed Bobby Dombrowski (Denville, N.J.) to walk across the plate. A John Walsh (Jersey City, N.J.) single up the middle scored two more runs for the Pirates, driving Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) and Lopez. Hines scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
New York Tech added two runs in the top of the sixth, cutting the score to 5-2. A Tom Murray sacrifice fly drove in Kraig Binick for the Bears first run of the game. Mike LaLuna, who had reached on an error earlier, moved to third on the sacrifice fly and scored on a ground-out to second base.
The Pirates increased their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Walsh drew a walk and moved to third on a Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) double down the right field line. Walsh crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Miller scored on a Mark Pappas (Ocean Township, N.J.) single to left field.
The Bears mounted a comeback in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs to cut the Pirates lead to 7-6. With one out, the Bears loaded the bases Joe Esposito drew a walk to score Brian Smith. An Jerry Smith infield single scored Binick and Tom Murray crossed the plate on a fielders choice. A single by Christian Dienna drove in Esposito. With the tying run at third, Seton Hall pitcher Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) struck out the next batter to keep the 7-6 lead.
Seton Hall added a one-run cushion to the score in the bottom half of the eighth inning. With two out, Hines drove in Smedberg, who reached on an error, for the 8-6 lead. Seton Hall held defensively in the top of the ninth and the 8-6 remained the final.
Seton Hall's Sean Black (3-3) earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings where he gave up just five hits and two runs. New York Tech's Matt Doran (0-4) was credited with the loss. McDonald earned his sixth save of the season.
