
Baseball Sweeps Double-Header with Georgetown

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.-- The Seton Hall baseball team swept a double-header with Georgetown on a cold and snowy Thursday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll field. The Piraates won the first game, 4-3 in 12 innings and took the second 2-1. Mike Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) led the team with four hits total in the two games.
In the first game, Seton Hall out-hit Georgetown 11-6 and stranded eight runners on base compared to Georgetown's six.
John Walsh (Jersey City, N.J.) and Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) each blasted a double in the victory and along with Young tallied two hits each.
Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Walsh led off the inning with a double to left field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Affinito drove in Walsh on a sacrifice fly.
Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. In Georgetown's half, Matthew Bouchard drove in Derek deGrijs on a triple to deep right center field. Seton Hall answered in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Affinito doubled to left center field and moved to third on a passed ball. Young drove in Affinito on a single to center field.
The Hoyas added two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. With one out, Georgetown loaded the bases. However a fielding error allowed Mark McLaughlin to reach first and score Matthew Maranges and Kelly Muir for the lead.
The Pirates tied it up in the eighth inning when Walsh singled to drive in Casey Hines (West Milford, N.J.), who had walked to start the inning. The two teams played even through nine innings and went into extra. Seton Hall held the edge in the extra innings, scoring in the bottom of the 12th when Tim McCann (Manasquan, N.J.) led off the inning with a single. He moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt and an error and scored on a Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) single down the right field line.
Seton Hall received solid pitching in the win. Keith Cantwell (Tinton Falls, N.J.) pitched nine innings and tallied eight strikeouts. Luis Fernandez (Union, N.J.) and Jesse Gwaltney (Battle Ground, Wash.) each pitched in relief. Gwaltney (1-0) was credited the win in relief. Georgetown's Daniel Kennedy (2-3) received the loss.
In game two, the Pirates were led by Corey Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) who pitched all nine innings for the win.
Although Georgetown scored the first run of the game in the top of the first, Seton Hall held the Hoyas offense in check for the remainder of the game. Georgetown scored its lone run of the game on a Brandon Davis RBI single that scored Derek deGrijs.
The Pirates tied it up in the second inning. With Walsh on first and McCann on second, the two completed a doublesteal and advanced an extra base on a throwing error that moved McCann to third and scored Walsh.
Seton Hall scored the winning run in the fourth inning. With one out, Dan McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) singled to second base and stole second. After a fly-out for the second out of the inning, Mike Young singled to left field to drive in McDonald.
Corey Young (2-2) struck out 10 batters gave up just four hits in nine innings of work for the win. Georgetown's Tim Adleman (2-3) was credited with the loss.
The teams will play the final game of the series on Saturday, Apr. 7, at Noon on Owen T. Carroll field.
