Fernandez completed his second straight season as one of the Pirates’ top relief pitchers. In 2007, he maintained a 3.96 ERA while striking out 20 batters in 25 innings. Fernandez’s 17 appearances were second-best on the team and he didn’t allow a home run all season.
In 2007, Lopez continued to wreak havoc on the base paths while playing his usual dazzling defensive centerfield. Flashing his trademark speed, Lopez stole a team second-best 10 bases last season while adding two home runs and 10 RBIs. He saw action in 46 games, making 42 starts, and wasn’t charged with a single error.
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, every college and university in the country is invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars must exhibit academic excellence and community activism.
To be included, students have to compete in an intercollegiate sport; maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2; and be active on their campuses or in their communities.
