Baseball Tops Memphis, 3-1

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Corey Young (Shrewsbury, N.J.) struck out eight batters in five innings and Greg Miller (Shamong, N.J.) scored two runs as the Seton Hall Pirates baseball team defeated Memphis, 3-1, Friday evening in USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn.

Following an RBI single by the Tigers’ Robby Graham scoring Tyler Huelsing in the bottom of the first inning, the Pirates (1-0) bounced back with a run of their own to tie the game in the top of the second.  Miller led off the inning with a single, and advanced to second when Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) singled to left field.  Miller scored the tying run when Memphis catcher Chris Kurkland made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Tim McCann (Manasquan, N.J.).

The score remained tied until the top of the sixth inning when Miller scored again on a Memphis error.  This time center-fielder Trey Wiedman made a fielding error on a ball off the bat of Lopez allowing Miller to score from first base.  The Pirates added their insurance run in the top half of the seventh inning when McCann scored on an RBI single by Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.).

Mark Pappas (Ocean Township, N.J.) finished the game 2-for-4 with a double, while Lopez also went 2-for-4 with two singles and a stolen base.

Young allowed only one run on five hits in addition to his eight strikeouts. Chris McGlynn (Rockaway, N.J.) struck out one batter in three scoreless innings of relief, and Miller picked up his first save of the season tossing a perfect ninth inning, striking out three. Scott Mcgregor (0-1) took the loss for Memphis after throwing six innings allowing two runs on five hits.

The Pirates return to action Saturday against Arkansas St. Right-hander Jesse Gwaltney (Battle Ground, Wash.) will take the mound.
