SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. Seton Hall baseball senior Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) batted 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, however it was not enough as the Pirates were defeated by St. Peters, 9-6, Tuesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Pirates (7-10, 1-2) took an early 2-0 lead when senior Mark Pappas (Ocean Township, N.J.) scored from second base on a fielding error by Peacocks sophomore shortstop Connor Mullee in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Chris Affinito (
The Peacocks (6-7) took the lead in the top of the third inning when senior Joe Romano hit an RBI single and senior Santo Maertz followed with a two-run single. With St. Peter’s ahead, 3-2, Mullee hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to add to the Peacocks lead.
The Pirates cut the lead to, 5-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning when Lopez scored from second base on a fielding error by Mullee, however St. Peter’s came back in the top of the seventh with a two-run single by Romano.
After a two-run triple by Mullee gave St. Peter’s a, 9-4, lead in the top of the eighth, the Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom half and picked up a two-run single up the middle by freshman Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.), who came in to pinch-hit for Fontenelli, to close in on the lead, however junior Andrew Costello closed the door to pick up his first save of the season.
In addition to Lopez, Affinito finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored. For the Peacocks, senior Dennis Alexander went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Mullee finished 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Pirates starter Chris McGlynn (Rockaway, N.J.) (1-1) took the loss after surrendering three runs, two earned, on six hits in 2.2 innings. Junior Jeff Bayse (1-1) earned the victory tossing 7.1 innings yielding six runs, three earned, on eight hits.
