
Baseball Drops Seesaw Affair With Stony Brook, 8-7

STONY BROOK, N.Y. The Seton Hall baseball team took a, 7-6, lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, however Stony Brook loaded the bases and scored a sacrifice-fly and a wild pitch as the Pirates fell, 8-7, Tuesday afternoon at University Stadium. With the loss, the Pirates are 29-21 overall for the 2008 season.
With the scored tied at five entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Stony Brook junior Steve Mazzurco hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give the Seawolves a, 6-5, lead entering the ninth inning. However, the Pirates loaded the bases with one-out and scored the tying run on a fielder’s choice groundout by sophomore Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.) and the go-ahead run on a throwing error by Stony Brook’s junior second baseman Chad Rebecca.
After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Pirates began the top of the third inning loading the bases with no outs. Junior Matt Smedberg (Rockaway, N.J.) hit the fourth-straight single of the inning for an RBI and freshman A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a sacrifice-fly for a, 2-0, advantage. Two batters later, junior Chris Affinito (East Brunswick, N.J.) hit a two-out RBI single to center field to give the Pirates a, 3-0, lead.
The Seawolves came right back to the tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, as well as, take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the third, freshman Chad Marshall and sophomore Michael Stephan hit back-to-back run-scoring singles to cut the lead to, 3-2, and junior Mike Tansey drove in the tying run with a one-out RBI fielder’s choice ground out to third base. In the fifth, Tansey hit an RBI single up the middle for a, 4-3, Seawolves lead.
Seton Hall tied the game at four in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single by Rusbarsky scoring senior Dan Lopez (Weehawken, N.J.) from second base. After Tansey connected for an RBI triple in the bottom half of the inning, the Pirates again tied the game with an RBI single by sophomore Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) scoring freshman Edward Brown (Edison, N.J.) from third base.
Smedberg led the way offensively for the Pirates batting 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Tansey finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Seawolves.
Sophomore Jesse Gwaltney (Ellenwood, Ga.) (0-3) took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits in 2.1 relief innings. Matt Harloff (3-2) picked up the victory surrendering two runs, one earned, on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
The Pirates will travel to Georgetown for a three-game series to complete the 2008 regular season schedule. Game one is set for Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
