Golf Rallies To Win Rutgers Invitational By One Stroke

FINAL RESULTS

PISCATAWAY, N.J. Freshman Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) shot a tournament best 4-under-par, 67, in the second round as the Seton Hall men’s golf team rallied from a seven stroke deficit following round one to win the Rutgers Invitational on Saturday.

After the first round, Seton Hall found itself in fifth place, but shot a 5-under-par, 279, on the second day to edge USC Upstate, the leader following round one, by one stroke.  It marks the first time in the three-plus years that Clay White has been the head coach that Seton Hall has shot a round under 280 strokes.

Seton Hall won the tournament with a 1-under-par, 567, while USC Upstate shot an even par 568.  Binghamton came in third with a 1-over-par, 569, Bryant University placed fourth with a 6-over-par, 574, and Central Connecticut and LIU tied for fifth with scores of 8-over-par, 576.  The field of 24 teams was the largest for the Rutgers Invitational in 10 years.

Senior John Zur (Glenview, Ill.) also had a strong second round, shooting a 2-under-par, 69, to tie Spencer for fourth place individually with a 2-under-par, 140, for the tournament.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pirates was Ryan Castanet (McDonald, Pa.) who shot a 1-under-par, 70, in the second round and finished with a 2-over-par, 144, for the tournament.  Sophomore Colin Van Es (Granger, Ind.) fired a 2-over-par, 73, in round two and finished with a 7-over-par, 149, for the event.  Junior David Sampson (Warren, R.I.) had a 9-over-par, 80, in the second round and finished with an 8-over-par, 150, for the tournament.

This is the second time in three years that Seton Hall has won the Rutgers Invitational.
