Golf Ranks Fifth after One Round of Towson University Invitational

GRASONVILLE, MD. The Seton Hall men’s golf team is currently in fifth place following the first round of the Towson University Invitational.  The Pirates are one of 17 teams competing at the par-72 Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.

Seton Hall shot a 14-over-par, 302 on Saturday and began play of round two before darkness suspended the tournament.  Second round play resumes at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday with round three to follow thereafter.  The Pirates trail the current leader, Kent State, by 17 strokes.  This is the first time Seton Hall has played in this tournament.

The Pirates lead a trio of BIG EAST schools after round one.  Rutgers is currently in 12^th place after firing a 21-over-par, 309, while Georgetown is in 14^th place after a 24-over-par, 312 on Saturday.

On a difficult day for all golfers, only four of the 90 individual players shot better than par on Saturday.  Additionally, only two other golfers shot par.

Freshman Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) leads the Pirates after firing a 2-over-par, 74, on Saturday and is currently tied for 15^th among all individuals.

Senior John Zur (Glenview, Ill.) also had a strong round one showing with a 3-over-par, 75, and is currently tied for 23^rd overall.  Junior David Sampson (Warren, R.I.) was one stroke behind Zur with a 4-over-par, 76, to tie for 29^th overall, while sophomore Colin Van Es (Granger, Ind.) was one stroke behind Sampson with a 5-over-par, 77, and is tied for 40^th place.

Junior Ryan Castanet (McDonald, Pa.) rounded out the first day’s scoring for Seton Hall with an 8-over-par, 80, and is tied for 66^th among all individuals.

Kent State’s John Hahn leads the individual field following his 4-under-par, 68.  He has a two-stroke lead.
