Ryan Castanet Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Seton Hall junior Ryan Castanet (McDonald, Pa.) was named BIG EAST Conference Golfer of the Week.  It is the second straight week a Pirate received the honor as freshman Troy Spencer was honored the week prior.

Despite high winds, Castanet led the Pirates to a ninth place team finish at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate, April 3-5.  Seton Hall shot a 42-over-par, 303-304-299-906, for the tournament.  Among the 17-team field were two other BIG EAST teams, St. John’s and Georgetown, who finished 13^th and 14^th respectively.

Castanet fired a 6-over-par, 76-73-73-222 to tie for 15^th among 93 individual golfers.  He finished 11 strokes behind James Madison’s Tim Driver for the individual crown.  Castanet’s 222 is his best three-round score of the year and his 15^th place finish is his highest finish of the spring.

Also being honored this week, USF’s Gennifer Mendez was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on the women’s side.

Castanet and the rest of the team will return to the links this weekend at the Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Fla. for the 2009 BIG EAST Championship.
