Troy Spencer Named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Seton Hall freshman Troy Spencer (High Point, N.C.) was named BIG EAST Conference Golfer of the Week on Thursday. 

Last weekend, Spencer led the Pirates to a third place team finish at the Towson University Invitational.  Seton Hall shot a 16-over-par, 302-282-296-880, for the tournament and finished only two strokes behind the second place team, William & Mary.  Among the 17-team field were two other BIG EAST teams, Georgetown and Rutgers, who finished ninth and 11^th respectively.

The Pirates’ 282 in the second round is their lowest single-round score since they shot a 280 in the third round of the Treasure Coast Classic on March 9, 2007.  Four of five Pirates shot par or better in that round, which was highlighted by a 3-under-par, 69, from Spencer.

For the tournament, Spencer fired a 1-over-par, 74-69-74-217 to tie for fifth among 90 individual golfers.  He finished only six strokes behind Kent State’s John Hahn for the individual crown.  Spencer’s 217 is the best three-round score of his career.  His second round 69 marks the second time in his career he has shot lower than 70 strokes in a single-round.

Also being honored this week, Louisville’s Cindy LaCrosse was named BIG EAST Golfer of the Week on the women’s side.

Spencer and the rest of the team will return to the links this weekend with three rounds of play at the Ironwood Pirate Intercollegiate, April 3-5.
