
Baseball Falls Short To Manhattan, 3-2

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team sent the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, however were unable to score as the Pirates lost to Manhattan, 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
With two outs in the home half of the ninth, Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) belted a triple down the right field line, and A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) drew a four-pitch walk, however Michael Rogers (Portland, Ore.) blooped a sure base hit into center field that was caught on a diving play by Jasper's centerfielder Kevin Nieto for the final out of the game.
The Hall (5-8) took an early lead with runs in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the second, Nick Ammirati (Sparta, N.J.) sandwiched a hit between walks by Michael Betz (Mini-Hill, N.J.) and Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) to load to bases. Next batter, Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) drew an RBI walk to give the Pirates a, 1-0, lead. They would add to the lead in the third inning with an RBI double by Betz.
Manhattan (8-4) came back in the top of the fifth inning with three runs to take the lead. It began with an RBI single by Nieto and ended with a two-run single by Mark Onorati.
Ryan Harvey (Manalapan, N.J.) (0-2) took the loss after yielding one run on three hits in 0.2 innings of relief. Matt Jordan (1-0) earned the win tossing four innings allowing two runs on four hits striking out three. John Soldinger picked up his fourth save pitching a scoreless ninth.
Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) led the Pirate offense with two of their eight hits, while Betz ended with a double, a walk, a run scored, and an RBI. Rusbarsky also reached base three times with a single and two walks.
The Pirates stay at Owen T. Carroll Field for the weekend when they welcome Iona, Central Connecticut State, and Stony Brook for the second of two Strike Out Cancer Weekends. They begin the weekend with a matchup against Iona at noon on Friday.
