WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - Seton Hall baseball freshman pitcher Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings, however it was not enough as the Pirates surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning losing to William & Mary, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park. With the loss, the Pirates lost the series, two-games-to-one and fall to 2-7 overall on the 2010 season.
With the Pirates ahead, 2-0, in the bottom of the ninth, William & Mary's left fielder Stephen Arcure ripped an RBI single scoring Chris Forsten who doubled to lead off the inning. After Arcure was caught stealing third base to clear the bases for the second out of the inning, pinch-hitter Andrew Steinberg sandwiched a single between walks for Chris Jensen and Derek Lowe. Ryan Brown followed with a two-run single up the middle to seal the victory for the Tribe.
Seton Hall jumped out to a, 2-0, lead in the top of the third inning. Red-shirt senior Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) led off with a double down the right field line followed by an RBI single by freshman Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.). Red-shirt junior Bobby Abreu (Piscataway, N.J.) successfully sacrificed bunted Sullivan to second before senior Michael Rogers (Portland, Ore.) drove Sullivan home with a single to center field.
The Tribe (5-4) had their chances prior to the ninth inning against Prosinski, but the right-hander stayed strong on the mound. With bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Prosinski struck out Jonathan Slattery to end the inning. In the sixth inning, after Derrick Osteen reached second base on a two-base Pirate error, he fanned Tadd Bower and induced a double play line out off the bat of Chris Forsten. In his final inning of work, he caught Lowe looking with two runners on to preserve the shutout.
Freshman Ryan Harvey (Manapalan, N.J.) (0-1) took the loss yielding three runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Jay McCarthy (1-0) picked up the win tossing one inning allowing one hit and striking out two.
Junior Frank Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the Pirate offense with three hits, while Rogers and Sullivan finished with runs scored.
The Pirates will return to the field when they host their second annual Strike Out Cancer Tournament next weekend at Owen T. Carroll Field. They will play a double header on Friday against NJIT at noon and Lafayette at 3:30 p.m.
