SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) (1-1) earned his first victory in his first collegiate start yielding two hits while striking out four batters in five scoreless innings, while Bobby Abreu (Piscataway, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and an run scored as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Saint Peter's, 6-0, Tuesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the win, the Pirates ended their two-game losing streak.
After a scoreless top of the first inning where Terhune faced the minimum three batters - with a little help by picking off lead-off hitter Justyn Carter at first base - Abreu began the bottom half of the first with a single up the middle. It would be the final play before the rain and lightning hit Owen T. Carroll Field delaying the game an hour and 35 minutes.
After the rain delay, Chris Spagnuolo (Tabernacle, N.J.) wasted no time getting the Pirates (16-24-1) on the board with an RBI double, scoring Abreu. Two batters later, Frank Esposito (Staten Island, N.Y.) plated Spagnuolo from third base with a groundout to third.
In the bottom of the second inning, Chris Fontenelli (Toms River, N.J.) plated another run for the Pirates with a two-out run scoring single driving home Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.)
After Abreu drove home A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh to give Seton Hall a four-run cushion, Michael Betz (Mine-Hill, N.J.) drove in Esposito with a triple to right-center field, and scored the sixth and final run on a sacrifice fly out off the bat of Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.).
Following Terhune's lead, Ricky Mangione (Orange, Conn.), Collin McGowan (Stratford, N.J.) and Ryan Harvey (Manalapan, N.J.) combined to toss the final four scoreless innings striking out five and surrendering only three hits.
Craig Hughes (1-5) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.
The Pirates return home on Friday to begin a three-game series with Pittsburgh.
