SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall men's golf head coach Clay White announced today that Gary Dunne (Wicklow, Ireland) and John Dawson Neufeld (Calgary, Canada) have signed national letters of intent to attend the University and play golf for the Pirates starting this fall.Dunne and Neufeld will join current Pirates Borja Faixat, a native of Barcelona, Spain, and Jamie Shirley, a native of London, England, as international student-athletes on the men's golf roster.
"The additions of Gary and John will mean that for the first time, we'll have more international players than America born players on the roster," White said. "I think both players can compete right away for a position in our lineup. Adding them will dramatically improve our team's depth. They're good kids who've already shown leadership qualities."
A native of Wicklow, Ireland, Dunne will join Seton Hall as a true freshman this fall. He has extensive experience as an amateur golfer in Ireland, but has also competed on American courses during extended tours. He's been successful in both countries, most recently winning the Wicklow Boy's Tournament in his native land and winning the Orange Lake Junior Open in Kissimmee, Fla. as recently as this April. Averaging a stroke average of 73.0 this past year, Dunne plans to major in Sports Management.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Neufeld comes to Seton Hall by way of McLennan Community College in Texas. He will have two years of eligibility remaining. While at McLennan, Neufeld guided his golf team to two straight NJCAA Division I National Championships and several other team victories including the 2009 Texas State Tournament and the 2009 Andrews Collegiate-Am. As an individual, Neufeld won the 2008 Quality Foods Jr. Open with a 63, and placed fifth at the 2010 Wrangler. Prior to his time at McLennan, he competed for Highland Secondary School in British Columbia where he won several tournaments, received academic scholarships and was a member of the honor roll.
The men's golf team will begin their 2010 fall season with the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate on Sept. 5.
