MIAMI, FLA. - For the first time this season, the Seton Hall baseball team was unable to avoid the sweep as they lost to Florida International, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at FIU Baseball Stadium in Miami.
Despite the sweep, the Pirates pitching showed more promise as they only allowed 11 runs in the three games, including Sunday afternoon when Greg Terhune (Washingston, N.J.) (0-2) took the mound allowing only two runs on six hits while striking out seven batters in six innings of work.
Behind Terhune, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Panthers struck with two runs behind an RBI double by Jose Behar and a run scoring bunt single by T.J. Shantz. Joel Capote capped the afternoon with a solo home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning giving his team a, 3-0, advantage.
FIU starter Daniel DeSimone (2-1) took over from there shutting down the Pirates offense allowing one run on three hits striking out seven in the complete game.
The Pirates run came in the top of the ninth when they put together their best inning offensively. With one out, Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) reached first on a bunt single. Two batters later, Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.), who drove in his first collegiate RBI in his first collegiate at second base start yesterday, came through again scoring Sullivan on a double to right-center field.
Genovese, Sullivan, and Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) had a hit each, and while Zach Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) (0-for-3) snapped his five-game hitting streak, but increased his on-base streak to six straight games with a walk.
Following Terhune, George Fernandez (Union, N.J.) took the hill for two-thirds of an inning and Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.) finished the game allowing a run on two hits striking out one in 1.1 innings of relief.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday when they play a neutral site game against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in Miami beginning at 1:00 p.m.
