PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) hit an RBI single in the top of the 13th to give the Pirates a, 3-2, win in game two of the doubleheader and earn the split on the day after they fell in game one, 4-1, Saturday afternoon at Bainton Field in Piscataway.
With the game tied at two in the top of the 13th inning, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a one out single and moved to second base on a ground out by Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.). Gusrang then followed with a single to right field plating Granite from second base for the go-ahead run.
Ryan Harvey (Manalapan, N.J.) would close the door on Rutgers completing his afternoon of 4.1 scoreless innings in relief striking out eight, including Jarrett Schack swinging and Dan Perrine looking to end the game.
Seton Hall trailed, 1-0, entering the top of the ninth when Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) hit a pinch-hit one out double to center field. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) followed with a walk before A.J Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) ripped a two-run double off the left field wall giving the Pirates a, 2-1, lead.
With the Pirates clinging to their first lead of the day, Russ Hopkins took Joe DiRocco's (East Hanover, N.J.) first pitch of the bottom of the ninth over the left field wall for his second home run of the season, tying the game at two and forcing extra-innings.
Earlier, Brandon Boykin gave the Scarlet Knights the, 1-0, lead in the bottom of the second inning when he hit a two-out bases loaded single through the right side of the infield.
Rob Corsi (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing a run on two hits in 4.1 relief innings of work.
DiRocco received a no-decision in the game despite striking out nine batters over 8.2 innings of work.
In game one Rutgers took an early, 3-0, lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the second inning.
They began the scoring when D.J. Anderson plated Steve Zavala from third base with a one out ground out to the left side of the infield. Michael Zavala followed with an RBI single for the Scarlet Knights, 2-0, advantage.
They added to the lead in the bottom of the second when Steve Zavala hit a run-scoring single.
Trailing by three runs, the Pirates built some momentum in the top of the fourth inning which began with a lead off bunt single by Granite. Genovese followed by bunting into a fielder's choice, but Papaccio ripped a single to move Genovese from first base to third base, and Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) scored the sophomore from Livingston on a single to left field.
Rutgers, however, quickly took their three-run lead back with an RBI ground out by Brian O'Grady in the home half of the fourth.
That was all starter Tyler Gebler (2-3) would need as he tossed a complete game five hitter, allowing one run to earn his second win of the year.
Benny Mejia (Paterson, N.J.) (2-2) suffered the loss as he lasted only 1.2 innings allowing three runs on five hits before being removed in favor of Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.). Morris handled himself well in the relief appearance yielding one unearned run on two hits while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.
The Pirates and Scarlet Knights will complete the three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
