PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Despite putting up five runs late in the game, the Pirates were unable to defeat the Scarlet Knights as they fell 9-5 in the rubber match of a three game set with Rutgers.
Down 8-0 going into the top of the fifth inning, left fielder Dale Anderson (Alberta, Canada) ripped a one out double over the center fielder's head. With the help of a passed ball to move Anderson to third, freshman catcher Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) ripped a two-out RBI single through the right side to give the Pirates their first run of the game.
The Pirates continued to battle in the sixth as Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single through the left side before stealing second base. With the help of a bloop base-hit and smart base running by Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.), senior Sean Gusrang (Burlington, N.J.) ripped a two RBI single up the middle to bring the score to 8-3.
After giving up another run to the Scarlet Knights in the sixth, the Pirates were able to respond and put up another run in the top of the seventh as senior A.J. Rusbarsky (Freehold, N.J.) shot a one-out double into left field before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center by Granite.
Down 9-4 in the top of the eighth, the Pirates were able to spark a little more momentum as Sean Gusrang led off the inning with a base hit through the middle. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Dale Anderson knocked an RBI single into right-field to bring the Rutgers lead within four.
Suffering the loss for the Pirates was John Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) who lasted 3.2 innings while allowing 8 runs, only three of which were earned, to bring him to a 1-3 record on the season. The win for the Scarlet Knights goes to Nathaniel Roe (3-4) who allowed only three runs in six innings of work.
The Pirate offense was sparked by junior Dale Anderson (2-4 with an RBI, a double, and a run scored) and senior Sean Gusrang (2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored). Leading the Scarlet Knight offense was third-baseman Russ Hopkins who went 3-5 with two doubles and one run scored.
The Pirates look to strike back on Wednesday as they play Fairleigh Dickinson University at home on Owen T. Carroll Field with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 PM.
