SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall baseball team held the high-powered St. John's offense to only seven hits, however on the heels of their highest offensive game, the Pirates were held to only one run on six hits as they lost the series opener to the Red Storm, 6-1, Friday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) provided the only spark for Seton Hall when he scored Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) from second base with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Granite extended the inning, which began with the Pirates trailing, 6-0, with a two-out double down the left field line.
Pirates' starter Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.) went pitch-for-pitch with Red Storm starter Kyle Hansen through the first three innings, but St. John's was able to break through in the top of the fourth.
Joe Panik led off the fourth with a walk and moved to third base on a successful hit-and-run by Jeremy Baltz. Matt Wessinger scored Panik on a infield single for the, 1-0, lead, and two batters later, Paul Karmas delivered a sacrifice fly to right field.
Ahead, 2-0, St. John's doubled their lead when Baltz drew an RBI walk and Wessinger was hit-by-a-pitch bringing home the fourth run in the visiting half of the fifth.
That was all Hansen (4-3) would need as he lasted eight innings surrendering six hits and one run while striking out two. Morris (0-1) suffered the loss in 4.1 innings yielding four runs on three hits in his first start - and 11th appearance - this season.
George Fernandez (Union, N.J.), Rick Mangione (Orange, Conn.), Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.), Ed Ras (Millstone Township, N.J.), and Genovese closed out the game in relief combining to toss the final 4.2 innings in relief striking out six batters and allowing only two runs.
Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) was the only Pirate to finish with multiple hits ending the game 2-for-4. In addition to Genovese's RBI single, the sophomore from Livingston finished the game on the hill striking out two batters in 1.1 innings of work.
The Pirates and Red Storm will continue the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
