SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's golf team will take some time off from the course to "Walk for a Cure" in an effort to support the ongoing fight against Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's is a degenerative brain condition that affects over five million Americans. Senior Nicole Longobardo (Upland, Calif.) knows the hardships associated with this disease all too well. Longobardo's grandmother lives with Alzheimer's disease and serves as the inspiration for this fund-raising effort.
"Being able to walk for a cure to Alzheimer's disease is extremely significant to me," Longobardo said. "There are not many ways to alleviate the effects of the disease, which is why helping to raise money to support Alzheimer's research is so important. I hope that our efforts help promote awareness that leads to a cure and no one else is forced to watch their loved ones suffer."
Walk to End Alzheimer's is the nation's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. The event is organized by the Alzheimer's Association and will be held on Sunday, October 9th in Princeton, N.J. The walk is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the site of the Educational Testing Service and covers a distance of approximately three miles.
"We decided that this was the charity that we would like to raise money for because it hits close to home for us," said Head coach Sara Doell. "When Nicole approached me about changing a day of practice to a day to head to Princeton to walk for a cure, it was a no-brainer."
For information on joining the women's golf team in their effort, please contact Doell via e-mail at sara.doell@shu.edu.
In 20 years of holding events nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association has raised more than $347 million to aid Alzheimer's research and care. If you would like to make a donation to support this cause, checks made out to the "Alzheimer's Association" can be mailed to:
