KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The Seton Hall baseball team gave up four runs in the bottom of the first and couldn't recover as Tennessee completed a three-game sweep of the Pirates with a 10-2 victory Sunday afternoon in Knoxville.
Seton Hall starter Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.) took the loss. The right-hander gave up five runs, one earned, over two innings, while striking out two and walking one.
The Pirates' offense could only muster two hits this afternoon as four Tennessee pitchers combined to face only four batters over the minimum. Volunteers' starter Nick Blount earned the victory with six innings of two run ball.
All of the Pirates' offense came in the top of the third inning. Chase Gray (Toms River, N.J.) walked to lead off and Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) sacrificed Gray to second. Junior Giuseppe Pappacio (Nutley, N.J.) followed with a single up the middle to score Gray and get the Pirates on the board. Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) bunted to move Papaccio to third and Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) delivered a two-out RBI single to score Papaccio and cut the Volunteer lead to 4-2.
But that would be all of the offense for Seton Hall as Tennessee added insurance runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and sixth innings.
The Pirates fall to 2-5 on the young season, while Tennessee improves to a perfect 7-0.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, March 2 as they travel to Charlottesville, Virginia for the University of Virginia Tournament. The Pirates will play four games over the weekend, two with host Virginia and two with Wright State.
