SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall pitchers gave up just two earned runs, but the Pirates couldn't find their offense and fell to Saint Peter's, 3-1, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Tuesday.
Peacocks' starting pitcher Eric Mozeika gave up just one unearned run over seven innings to earn the victory and drop the Pirates' record back below .500 for the season at 9-10.
Sophomore Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) made his first start of the season for Seton Hall and gave up two earned runs over five innings. The right-hander struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
Saint Peter's (5-16) grabbed the lead right away, scoring a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI ground out by Russell Stupienski.
Seton Hall evened the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. With one out, Dale Anderson (Alberta, Canada) reached first on an error and then promptly stole second base. He advanced to third when Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) struck out and forced a throw to first, and scored on a passed ball.
With the scored tied at one, Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) and Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. But Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) grounded into a triple play to end the threat.
Saint Peter's then struck for two runs in the top of the fourth and that would be all the offense they would need.
The Pirates only mustered five hits against the Peacocks and left nine runners on base.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond on Friday, March 23 when they begin their BIG EAST title defense against Rutgers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
