CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Four relievers combined for six scoreless innings as the Seton Hall baseball team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Virginia, 5-2, in Charlottesville on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Benny Mejia (Paterson, N.J.) came on in the fourth inning in relief of starter Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) to earn the victory. Mejia gave up just one hit in two innings of work. Mejia was followed by Ed Ras (Millstone Township, N.J.), who added one and one third innings of hitless ball. George Fernandez (Union, N.J.) finished Ras' seventh inning and Ryan Harvey (Manalapan, N.J.) pitched the final two innings without giving up a hit to record his first save of the season.
Trailing 2-0, the Pirates got on the board in the top of the second inning. Senior Dale Anderson (Alberta, Canada) led off with a triple to right center and senior Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to cut the Cavaliers' lead in half.
Virginia (6-4-1) would maintain the 2-1 lead until the top of the fifth inning. Freshman Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) singled through the left side to lead off for Seton Hall. Michael Betz (Mine Hill, N.J.) sacrificed Falconi to second, but Virginia's pitcher threw the ball away allowing Falconi to come all the way around and score and Betz to advance to third. Catcher Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) hit a sac fly to center to score Betz and the Pirates' took the lead, 3-2.
Seton Hall (4-7) would add insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) and the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.).
Granite and Falconi led the Pirates with two hits apiece.
The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday, March 7 for their home opener at Owen T. Carroll Field. Seton Hall will host Manhattan, led by former player and coach Jim Duffy. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
