SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) and freshman Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) led a 16-run, 14-hit offense as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated NYIT, 16-7, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Tuesday.
With the victory, the Pirates have now won four of their last five games and improve to 20-16 on the season.
Trailing 1-0, the Seton Hall offense excelled from the start, exploding for four first inning runs. Senior Dale Anderson (Calgary, Canada) led off with a double to right field and Genovese followed with an RBI single. Two batters into the inning and the Pirates tied the score at one. After Genovese stole second, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) walked and Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Then Annunziata delivered the big blast of the game, a three-RBI triple, to put Seton Hall up 4-1.
Annunziata finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs on the day. Genovese also had three RBIs for Seton Hall and was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two walks.
After NYIT crept back to within 4-3 in the top of the second, the Pirates' offense put three more runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Three batters after a Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) fielder choice scored D.J. Ruhlman (Belle Mead, N.J.) for the first run of the inning; Sullivan delivered a two-RBI single to extend the Pirates' lead to 7-3.
From there, Seton Hall never looked back.
In addition to Annunziata and Genovese, Walsh, Anderson and Chase Gray (Toms River, N.J.) all had two hits for the Pirates.
On the mound, Seton Hall used a season-high eight pitchers to retire NYIT. Junior Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.) pitched the best of the group to earn the victory. Morris went 1.1 innings and didn't allow a base runner while striking out three batters.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond on Friday, April 20 as it begins a three-game series with Villanova. Friday's game begins at 6:00 p.m., while games on Saturday and Sunday will be at 1:00 p.m.
