WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Junior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) hit a grand slam and drove in six RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Monmouth, 15-3, on Tuesday in West Long Branch, N.J.
Kalamar finished his career-best performance, 4-for-6. His long ball was the first of his career.
Seton Hall (22-18) got on the board right away. Senior Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) doubled down the right field line to lead off the game, and two batters later, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) singled through the left side on a hit and run to score Walsh.
The lead didn't last long however, as Monmouth's Dan Avella singled home Eddie Martin with two outs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one. The Hawks then took their first lead in the bottom of the second on an infield single to make the score 2-1.
Junior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) doubled to lead off the top of the third inning, and after a passed ball moved him to third, freshman Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) brought him home with an RBI ground out, tying the game at two apiece.
The Pirates took advantage of some poor Hawk defense in the top of the fourth. After Monmouth retired the first two batters in order, Walsh walked and advanced all the way to third on a pick off throw that sailed into foul territory. Walsh scored the go-ahead run on the second Hawk error of the inning, a ball that went through the shortstops legs off the bat of Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.).
Kalamar hit a single in the top of the fifth inning to score Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) for an important insurance run to extend the Pirates lead to 4-2.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Sullivan broke the game open with a two-RBI single to plate Genovese and Papaccio and give Seton Hall a commanding 6-2 lead.
If the game was still in question before the seventh inning, the Pirates left no doubt after the seventh. Seton Hall sent 13 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on five hits with the big blast coming in the form of Kalamar's grand slam to give the Pirates a 13-2 lead.
Seton Hall scored in every inning, except for the second, in the game.
Giuseppe Papaccio and Will Walsh each reached base five times. Papaccio went 4-for-6 with a walk and two RBIs, while Walsh was 3-for-5 with two walks.
Junior Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa.) gets credit for the win in relief. Morris pitched two innings of scoreless baseball in relief of starter Henry Warner (Gladstone, N.J.). Warner also pitched well, going four innings, with two earned runs, three strike outs and no walks.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond tomorrow when it hosts Iona at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
