SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Junior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) and four relievers limited Iona to just one run as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated the Gaels, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Terhune improved to 2-1 on the season after going five and two thirds innings while giving up just on earned run, striking out four and not walking a batter.
Seton Hall (23-18) got on the board first. Junior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) led off the second inning with a single to left field. Freshman Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) followed with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt to move Kalamar to second and senior Mike Betz (Mine Hill, N.J.) singled home Kalamar with the game's first run.
After Iona got the equalizer in the top of the fourth, the Pirates grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) doubled down the left field line to lead off, and two batters later, Boyd plated the second Pirates' run on a sacrifice fly.
Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) singled home Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) with one out in the fifth inning to give Seton Hall an important insurance run and a 3-1 lead.
Grimm's RBI single in the eighth inning scored Chase Gray (Toms River, N.J.) with the fourth and final run of the game. Grimm was the lone Pirate with two hits today. He finished 2-for-4.
Senior Benny Mejia (Paterson, N.J.) came on in the ninth inning and retired the Gaels in order for his team-leading fourth save of the season.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond on Friday, April 27 when it begins a three-game series with BIG EAST rival West Virginia at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
