The baseball team engaged in a number of outdoor activities with the kids, holding relay races and other outdoor games while offering up motivation and encouragement to all of the participants.
Marie Lachanski, a part-time educational consultant with the South Mountain YMCA said all of the kids had a great time with the team and that the players did an excellent job including and interacting with all of the kids in the program.
"The children went home and shared with their families how excited they were to have local ‘celebrities' on their relay race team," Lachanski said.
Week of the Young Child is held yearly at Early Childhood Learning Centers around the country. The purpose of the week is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
The YMCA at South Mountain added its own twist to the week in adding programming that highlighted healthy living, which is where the Pirates became involved, helping lead fun outdoor activities for the preschoolers.
Since its founding in 1970, the South Mountain YMCA has become a hub of both the South Orange and Maplewood communities. It is one of the largest providers of childcare, summer day camp and youth sports programming in the area and offers before and after school care for all elementary schools in the district.
