QUEENS, N.Y. - Freshman Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) went 3-for-4 and junior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) pitched six innings of one-run baseball as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated St. John's, 4-1, for its third straight win on Thursday.
Grimm also drove in a run, scored a run and stole the first base of his collegiate career.
Prosinski improves to 8-3 on the season after scattering just four hits over six innings while striking out five and walking two.
Seton Hall (32-21, 16-9) drew first blood in the top of the second. Junior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on Grimm's single that chopped down the left field line over the third baseman's head. Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) followed with a ground out to third, which scored Kalamar with the game's first run.
St. John's (32-20, 17-8) tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Zack Lauricella in the bottom of the fourth, but the Pirates re-took the lead in the top of the fifth inning.
Senior Michael Betz (Mine Hill, N.J.) reached on an error by the Red Storm shortstop to lead off the inning. Three batters later, Will Walsh (New Milford, N.J.) singled through the right side to score Betz with two outs and give the Pirates a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Pirates tacked on an important insurance run. Annunziata delivered a one-out single and Kalamar walked to get Sal to second base. Grimm followed with his first RBI of the day on a single to right center, scoring Annunziata and extending the Seton Hall lead to 3-1.
Grimm's third single of the day got things started for the Pirates in the top of the ninth. After Falconi moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt, Grimm scored with two outs on an error by the Red Storm first baseman to give Seton Hall a 4-1 lead.
After Prosinski left following the sixth inning, three Seton Hall relievers held St. John's to just two hits over the final three frames. Senior Benny Mejia (Paterson, N.J.) came on for the final three outs to earn his BIG EAST second-best ninth save of the season.
With the victory, the Pirates pull to within a single game of the BIG EAST-leading Red Storm with two regular season games remaining.
Seton Hall scored four runs in its sixth straight game. The Pirates are 4-2 in the stretch.
Seton Hall will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for game two of its three-game set at St. John's. That game will also be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
