Baseball Falls at #1 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) blasted his second career home run, but the Seton Hall baseball fell in the finale of an abbreviated season-opening series at #1 North Carolina, 17-2, on Sunday.
Kalamar reached base four times on Sunday with his home run and three walks. He scored both of the Pirates' runs and recorded his first stolen base of the season.
Seton Hall (0-2) starter Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) had trouble from the start as the Tar Heels broke the game open with eight runs over the first two innings. Back-to-back RBI singles with one out in the bottom of the first put the Pirates an immediate 2-0 deficit.
The Pirates however, cut the lead in half in the top of the second. Kalamar and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) both walked to start the inning. With one out, Kalamar stole third and was sacrificed home on a bunt by Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) to cut the Tar Heels lead to 2-1.
Holding a slim early lead, North Carolina broke the game open in the top of the second. After Gilbert got outs on the first two batters, he gave up a single, hit-by-pitch and consecutive walks to plate North Carolina's third run. Josh Prevost (Belle Meade, N.J.) came on in relief, but allowed five more runs to cross the plate, three that belonged to Gilbert, before getting the third and final out, giving the Tar Heels a commanding 8-1 lead.
After two scoreless innings of relief by sophomore Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.), North Carolina struck for six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The big blow was a one-out, two-run home run by pinch hitter Grayson Atwood off senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.). When the dust cleared, North Carolina led 14-1.
During Sunday's contest, Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) made his collegiate debut. The freshman entered as a pinch hitter and went 0-for-2.
Seton Hall will return to action next Friday, Feb. 22, when it travels to Johnson City, Tennessee to begin a three-game series with East Tennessee State. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
